La Trobe university乐卓博大学以查尔斯·约瑟夫·乐卓博(Charles Joseph La Trobe)的名字命名。查尔斯·约瑟夫·乐卓博曾于 1839 年至 1850年任菲利普港区第1任局长，于1851年至1854年任维多利亚州新殖民地第1任总督。他致力于在其辖区有所作为、创造不同，这一优良传统如今也在以其命名的乐卓博大学延续着。
1967年3月8日，乐卓博大学正式建校成立。时任维多利亚州州长的Henry Bolte爵士和前澳大利亚总理Robert Menzies出席了开幕仪式。
1967年，作为维多利亚州开办的第三所大学，乐卓博大学招收了552个学生，自此学校不断发展，现如今已有36000余名学生，包括来自110个国家的8000多名国际学生。
在50多年的发展历程中，乐卓博大学成为全澳一流大学之一。如今乐卓博大学拥有7个校区，墨尔本校区有超过26000名学生，在奥尔伯里-沃东加、本迪戈、米尔迪拉以及墨尔本市区(科林斯街-富兰克林街)，谢帕顿以及悉尼众多校区中也有7500余名学生。
乐卓博大学投资逾5亿澳元新建世界级学习研发设施，包括：
· 农业生物科技中心——世界级农业生物科学的研发设施 - 乐卓博分子科学研究院LIMS——支持超过400位研究人员的研发工作
· 乐卓博野生动物保护——位于墨尔本Bundoora校区，拥有众多本土特色动植物，如袋鼠和鹗鹋。
· 墨尔本City校区扩建，为商科及法学研究生在墨尔本市中心打造全新的学习场地。
